Speedweek Opener To Williams

Official Release: Finish Line Media

Australian Formula 500 champion Liam Williams continued his good form this season by taking out the opening round of the Victorian Formula 500 Speedweek Series last night at Borderline Speedway in Mt Gambier.

The meeting looked in doubt as a deluge of rain fell on the venue the night preceding the event but clearing weather allowed the show to be run.

A field of over 40 cars was on hand with cars represented from Victoria, South Australia & Queensland.

The night got underway with 6 Heat races with Williams, taking out the opener from Queensland’s Ryan McNamara & Current Victorian Champion James Aranyosi. Heat Two would be taken out by Jake Hose from Josh Buckingham and local driver Jordan Mansell. The final heat of the first round was taken by AJ Blackstock from Tyler Beasy and Andrew Rae.

Terry Rankin got his Speedweek account underway by taking out Heat 4 from Williams from the back with South Aussie Richard Schmidt claiming third. Heat 5 would be taken out by Lexi Underwood which was a popular win from Jesse Elston and Chris Bellman. The final heat of the night was won by Dale Sinclair with Jack Bell and Jack Disbury completing the podium.

The C Main was won by Lee Hardess with Leigh Van Ginneken, Ryan Skennar, Jayden Rickett, Jesse Elston and Ashlee Aranyosi completing the top 6 and all transferring to the B Main.

The B Main was won by Ryan McNamara from Lexi Underwood and Glen Underwood with Jack Disbury, Richard Schmidt and Andrew Rae also making the A Main.

Williams and Jack Bell would occupy the front row for the 20 lap Final and Williams would get the jump on Bell who was slot into second.  On the initial start there would be an incident that eliminated Jake Hose and one of the pre-race favourites Chris Bellman. Lexi Underwood was also involved but was able to restart. Under resumption Williams again go the jump on Bell, a battle pack would develop in the first half of the race between Grant Stansfield, James Aranyosi, Angelo Karoussis and Tyler Beasy. Terry Rankin would also retire early on with a chain issue.

At the half way mark Williams would have a sizeable lead from Bell who was having a good run with lap traffic and wasn’t letting the Aussie 1 too far out of sight. The battle for positions in the lower half of the top ten was really hotting up and Aranyosi was under pressure from Stansfield, Karoussis and Beasy and he would eventually drop out of the top 5 after clipping an infield tyre marker forcing the tyre off the rim. Lexi Underwood was one of the movers in the field having come from the B Main she was up into the top 10.

Williams was in heavy lap traffic and with one lap to go Bell had his chance but was unable to capitalize with cars almost side by side at the chequers. Grant Stansfield would continue his good run with a 3rd place while Angelo Karoussis would finish in 4th from Tyler Beasy in 5th. Josh Buckingham would have a great run to finish 6th while the top ten was completed by Patrick Merrett, defending Speedweek champion Matthew Symons, James Aranyosi & Lexi Underwood.
